Puriri's Last Blog of the Year

With only two more weeks to go this is Puriri teams last blog of the year. Sven and I want to say a HUGE thank you to all the parent help we have had this year. Each and every one of our students are such awesome kids and we wish them all the best for next year.
Where ever they end up, they will be amazing. Safe holidays everyone!

Business Day

A big thank you to everyone who helped out last Friday. It was a big success and the children did such an incredible time selling their products. We haven't got an exact profit number back as of yet but we can tell that it looks like one of our most successful days!

Wonder - The Movie

As you all know the Puriri team went and watched Wonder at the movies last Thursday. The students absolutely loved it and were so well behaved, even doing a really good job at making sure we left the cinema only after we had cleaned up after ourselves. They all represented the school really well.

Basketball Prizegiving

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the basketball season this year! Bayfield had a lot of teams and every single one of them were awesome players on and off the court. Here are a few from the Puriri team with their end of year trophies.

Puriri Team 5 - Term 4 , Week 4

Puriri Team
Week 4 of term 4 already! With only 5 weeks left, this term is flying by! The Puriri students are still working hard each day and being the awesome students they are.

Auckland Marathon - Last weekend we had a lot of Bayfield students (the most entered by one school) take part in the last 2.5 km of the Auckland Marathon. These students had been training hard each day going on runs with Kate, Ashley, Jack and Sophie adding up their distant to reach a full 42 km! The day was perfect running weather and the students from the Puriri team were incredibly fast. Making a real effort with the distance they had. Well Done Guys!

(Some of the Marathon runners)

Kids for Kids Choir - Congratulations to all of the students from the Puriri team who took part in the Kids for Kids Choir on Monday! You all represented the school incredibly well and should be very proud.

Business Day 1 December - Business Day planning is in full swing already. The students have come up with some fantastic money making ideas and Sven and I are really looking forward to how they all turn out on the day. The students have their business plan on their Onenotes and know all the tasks they and their groups need to complete. (Including jingles, logos and and a slogan). Good luck to everyone and their ideas. Parents can help by double checking that their children's ideas are something that is possible. :)
*We are quite keen to get some guest speakers in to talk to us about setting up a successful business so you or someone you know would be willing to come and chat to the team please email Sven or Jack and let us know.

STEPZ Dance - Sven's dance moves weren't cutting it anymore and the kids had had enough of the robot!  From this Thursday, the Puriri team will be getting some real lessons by starting their first of three dance lessons with STEPZ dance. Feel free to teach your children some 'real' dance moves if you get the chance.

We hope everyone has had a joyful start to the term and we wish you all the best for the rest of it. As always, if you need to talk to Sven or I feel free to pop into class in the mornings or flick us an email.

Puriri Team 5 - Term 4 , Week 2

The Puriri Team's Last Term - Can you believe it is our last term as Year 5.  We have had an amazing year of learning but it isn't over yet.  We are still working very hard on our next learning steps and working our way through our learning progressions.

Chapter Chat - This term we are reading the book Wonder, by R.J Palagio for Chapter Chat.  It is an amazing book that deals with lots of issues kids face like bullying and accepting differences in others with the ultimate message being that kindness conquers all.  We are planning on going to see the movie on November the 30th as a follow up to the book.  The video for the trailer is below if you want to have a look.  Please let Sven or Jack know if you have any objections.

Reading Zone - Reading Zone has had a huge impact for our team.  Our reading ability and motivation has gone through the roof!  This is just a friendly reminder that we need to bring our Reading Zone book home each day and then return it to school the following day. This means we are reading the same book for up to an hour a day.  Some of us have churned through more books than you've had hot dinners!

Business Day - Our big inquiry focus for the term is Business Day.  Over the next 6 weeks we are going to be doing a lot of work around Business Day and creating successful businesses.  This will involve writing, art and lots of relevant maths in the lead up to the big event which will be on Wednesday 6th December.
*We are quite keen to get some guest speakers in to talk to us about setting up a successful business so you or someone you know would be willing to come and chat to the team please email Sven or Jack and let us know.

Athletics - What an awesome day!  The weather was great and the level of enthusiasm was high.  Well done to all our students and good luck to those who are going on to compete at the inner city competition which will be held on the 22nd November.

Library - Our library day will continue to be Tuesday from 11.20 - 12.00.  If any parents are happy to help out with returns and issues could you please let Jack or Sven know and we could start a timetable.

The Puriri Team - The last week of term! It has been an incredibly busy term for the whole school, with a visit from ERO and the production. Even though it was such a full on term the Puriri team have been incredible and are still learning a lot to the last day of the term.

The Production - We wrapped up the production with three amazing shows last week. All of our students had such an amazing time performing with their different groups in the production. We hope that you all were able to see your very talented children perform their parts. Well done to the main cast and Joanie for producing such a wonderful display of a production and congratulations. All of the students stood out and should be very proud of themselves.

Netball - Some of the girls from our Puriri team took part in the inner city school netball competition last week and did Bayfield incredibly proud by coming second. Westmere unfortunately edging out Bayfield in the final.

Solve-it: The Case of the Missing Shamrock

Mystery

Read this mystery story below if you are attending the workshop on Thursday so you can come ready with your theories about who committed the crime...

It was late afternoon when Nina and Max Passed Miss Flannagan’s classroom at Harborville Middle School. They were about to go home when they saw their teacher scowling at Maria inside. Maria was also scowling and she was whispering to Miss Flannagan, while Megan and Patrick stood Listening Nearby.
“Let’s stop a minute and see what’s going on here,” Nina said to Max.
Miss Flannagan motioned them to come in. “I have a problem” here. Maybe you two can help me with it. You’ve solved Mysteries before, so please think a bit about this one.” “What’s going on?” Max asked. “Give us the details. Why are you whrispering, Maria?”
“I have a cold,” Maria Whispered and popped a cough drop into her mouth. “I lost my voice two days ago.”
“But what’s the problem, Miss Flannagan?” Nina asked. “Surely you’re not looking for maria’s lost voice.” Patrick and Megan giggled, but they said nothing. Miss Flannagan didn’t smile. Nor did Maria.
“My shamrock plant’s missing,” Miss Flannagan said. “It was right here on my desk, a few minutes ago. I brought it to school so my students could see a true shamrock plant, but now it’s gone. I can’t find it anywhere. I left the room for just a few moments to take some books to the media center. I know the plant was there at that time because I watered it. But when I returned to my classroom, These three were here and my shamrock was gone. I think one of them has taken it. Maybe one of them is hiding it as a joke.”
Nina thought about the missing plant as she looked at patrick, Megan, and Maria. they all looked nervous and ill at ease.
“What do you three have to say about this?” Nina asked. “Patrick, you told me yesterday that you needed a gift for your grandmother who is visiting you. was taking Miss Flannagan’s plant the solution to your problem?”
“No,” Patrick said. “Megan and Maria were already in Miss flannagan’s room when I arrived to get my English Assignment. I didn’t see the shamrock plant. I didn’t take it they’ll vocuh for me.”
“What about you, Megan?” Max asked. “You’ve worked on a lot of science projects and you’ve always liked unusual plants. Did you take the shamrock?”
“Of course not,” Megan said. “I already have two shamrock palnts at home. I didn’t take Miss Flannagan’s plant. I just stopped by to leave my book report on her desk. Maria was already in the room.”
“And you, Maria?” Nina asked.
“I didn’t take the plant,” Maria Whispered. “I Just Stopped by after choir practice to get my notebook. We’re performing for tomorrow’s assembly. I didn’t take the plant.”
Nina and Max stepped into the hall to discuss what they had heard. when they returned nina spoke. “We think we know who took the shamrock plant.”

Whom does Max suspect?

The Puriri Team - We are enjoying another fun and educational filled term in the puriri team. We inlcuded NZ math week into our workshops last week and the problems we faced were difficult but taught us a lot! Literacy has been brilliant this term and with the writing sample we have just completed, Sven and I can see big improvements in a lot of students work, well done team!

Here is our photo of one of our workshops where we learnt how to make a triangle using only one straight cut.

The boys were incredible and only just lost by one try to Westmere in the final. Both teams showed some awesome skills and made Bayfield incredibly proud.

Speech Information

Senior School Speech Competition

All Y5 & 6 children will prepare a 3 minute speech to present to their team during week 5, Monday 21st August – Friday 25th August. Five to six speeches from each team will be selected for the senior school finals, which will be held on Monday 4th September (Week 7).

The overall winner will go forward to the Inner City Schools Zone final which will be held in Week 8 or 9 (more details on this to follow)

This week all children will be expected to begin preparing their speeches. There will be some class time allocated for this but all children are expected to work on it at home as well.
Below are some guidelines for how to go about writing your speech and the marking criteria that you will be judged against is on OneNote in the Content folder.

How to go about Preparing Your Speech – Week 2 (Next Week)

  1. Topic
Choose your topic carefully. It is easier to do a speech on a subject you know about or are interested in. Some examples of past topics are: Climbing to Success, Going to the Dentist, My Worst Day, If I Could Change the World, Give It a Go, Helpful Hints For Boring Moments,

     2.   Brainstorming

Write down everything you know about your topic. Brainstorm with lots of others: classmates, mum, dad, brothers, sisters, grandma, grandpa, etc. Organise your ideas into a mindmap.

     3. Message
Decide on the message that you are trying to get across to your audience. You may
need to carry out some research.

4.   Introduction
Remember you must catch the attention of your audience.

5.   Main Part of Your Speech
Now that you’ve gained the attention of the audience you must keep it- otherwise they will switch off.

6.   Conclusion
It is really important that you sum up your speech because these are your final words. You need to leave your audience thinking “WOW, What a neat speech!” and give them a clear message that your speech is finished.

          REMEMBER
Giving a speech is not a dramatic performance.
A good speech informs, convinces, persuades and the manner in which it is
communicated to the audience is all-important.

Speeches – Week 3

By now you should have completed your draft copy of your speech. When you read it aloud it should be between 2 1/2 and 3 minutes.

Read through your speech heaps and heaps of times. Time each other.
Drive mum and dad crazy reading and timing your speech.  You need to spend the first two homework nights reading your speech aloud. Make relevant changes to your draft- ask yourself “How can I make my speech better? Am I getting my message across?   Does my introduction wake up the audience? Does my conclusion sum up my speech and leave my audience thinking “What a neat speech”

           REMEMBER
Giving a speech is not a dramatic performance.
A good speech informs, convinces, persuades and the manner in which it is
communicated to the audience is all-important.

By the middle of the week you should be able to pick out the relevant main
         points of your speech.

  • Now it’s time to plan your cue cards. These should be able to be held in the palm of your hand.
  • Number each one, or punch a hole in the corner and tie together.
  • Condense to the main points. Do not attempt to write out the whole speech.
  • Use words with impact.
  • Highlight key words.

Keep your cue cards neat.

SPEECHES WEEK 4

Now it’s time to practise delivering your speech.
Catch your audience’s attention right from the start. Be natural, confident, smile and frown as you would normally.
Talk with your audience- looking at them as you speak. You’re trying to get a message across to them.
Stand up straight and relaxed. Leave your audience with something to remember.
Practise your speech from cue cards. Do it out loud until you feel comfortable with the flow. Also practise in front of a mirror so you can see your expression, stance and gestures.
Using your voice: You need to present your speech effectively by varying.
Speed: Speak slowly enough for the audience to understand you. Change pace as appropriate.
Pitch: You have a wide range of 1 to 2 octaves to use.
Expression: Use your voice to show emotions e.g. fear, anger, excitement, sorrow etc.
Volume: Every word of your speech is important. The whole audience needs to be able to hear every word. This needs practice.
Remember you will be marked on
