The Rimu Team

The Term So Far..

Art is definitely underway now with Jack's photography looking really incredible and Sven's Korowai cloaks beginning to take shape.  Parent help is always needed during this time so feel free to drop Jack or Sven a line if you can help out.

Writing this term has been a great time for the students. Sven's group have created some great narratives that will slowly begin to appear on the walls in our space, in our new Published Section. Jack's group have looked at persuasive writing and are now using that to take part in some class room debates which are looking really strong from all sides.

We will also start Genius Hour every Friday which is very exciting as it allows us to explore things we love and are passionate about.  Below is a link to a website with lots of useful information and background history on Genius Hour

Congratulations to all the Bayfield students who took part in the Inner City Swimming Event. Although we weren't able to defend the cup this year, our swimmers did such an incredible job. We had a lot of students either place or win the finals and all our students should be very proud. They represented Bayfield so incredibly well!

Rimu Teams 5 & 6 - Term 2 Week 2 ending 11 May 2018

The Rimu Team

Wow it has been an incredible start to the term!  Camp and EOTC completely rocked our socks off!  During the week we had so much fun and learnt many valuable lessons and skills along the way.  Whether it was facing our fear of heights by climbing a wall or learning the art of orienteering or just having a blast hiding in the dark hoping not to get spotted with the torch during spotlight, it was incredible! Camp and EOTC week will be memories we cherish forever!  Once again a massive thank you to all of our amazing parents that helped out during this week.  We really couldn't have done it without you!
A lot of very tired kids though...

Rimu Term 1 Week 10 ending 13 April 2018

The Rimu Team

The last week of term is already here and man has it come along super fast. It has been an incredible term getting to know all our students, The Rimu team has really gotten into the swing of things this term and a lot has been learnt by the students and the teachers. A very busy term has come to an end and we hope you and all the children get a good rest during the holiday break.

Bayfield Get Inspired

Our students had an incredible time on our Get Inspired Day and if you took part, thank you all very much for your help! The school couldn't have done it without you. Football, mountain biking, Mind Lab, cooking, Rangitoto and more! It was a fun filled day and we hope your children were inspired by something new and had an awesome day. Pictures will be up on the school website if you would like to see photos of the day.

Reading Zone

Don't forget students must be taking their Reading Zone books home each night to read for at least 30mins.  It must be the same book that they are reading at school. During the school holidays the students should try to get in the 30mins - 1hr a day.

Camp

Don't forget that camp begins for the year 5's on the first day of term 2 and then for the year 6's the day after. Hopefully you have read all the information about this. If there are any  questions you have unanswered feel free to email Sven or myself. The students have just written down who they want to bunk with so they are all getting excited for it already. It's going to be a fun week.

X- Country

X-country will be taking place in the third week of term 2. This takes us around the Cox's Bay park, with the students running in their age groups. If the students would like to get a head-start on the competition feel free to encourage them to go for some runs during the holidays. Otherwise training will start for this after camp is over.

Goodbye Peter

Last week was Peter's last week on the job as he is moving on to a new school and a new challenge. We wish him all the best at his new school! Peter has been an integral part of the Bayfield staff for quite some time now and it is very sad to see him leave. He will be at the school assembly on Friday this week, where we will send him away in the Bayfield style. Peter has been incredible with his help around the school, feel free to attend the school assembly this week to join us in saying goodbye to Peter.

Sven and I want to thank you all for any help that has been offered this term. We have really enjoyed getting to know our students and of course you, the parents. We hope everyone enjoys their holiday! We will see you all in two weeks!

Rimu Term 1, Week ending 29th March

The Rimu Team of Learners

Easter already and the end of term is in sight.  Well done to all of our fantastic students who shared their learning with their parents and caregivers during our two days of learning conferences.  You were all so confident sharing your learning goals and talking about what you have achieved and what your next steps are.  It will be great to see all the exciting progress you have made at our next round of conferences midyear.

Life Education

Our students have been attending Life Education sessions over the last two weeks.  The focus for the sessions has been around building self-esteem, having a positive mindset, and also how to stay cyber-safe.  They have been given activity booklets that have tasks related to some of the learning that has taken place, which will be sent home.

PAT Testing

This week we have been doing PAT Testing. These tests are sat every year and are used alongside other data to inform the teaching and learning programmes. The results for these will be shared with the students when they become available.

Bayfield Get Inspired

Our students have now been put into their groups for this after choosing their top 3.  They will have found out by the end of the week and groups will be meeting next Thursday 5th April to discuss what they will be doing and what they need to bring before the following day, 6th April, when they will be with their group for the whole day doing their chosen activity.

Reading Zone

Don't forget students must be taking their Reading Zone books home each night to read for at least 30mins.  It must be the same book that they are reading at school.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports was a huge success.  A big thank you to all of our amazing parents who helped to make the day run so smoothly.  Those students who gained top 3 placings will attend the ICSS Swimming Sports Competition on 10th May.

Rimu Term 1, Week 6 ending 16th March 2018

The Rimu Team

This term seems to be flying by! The Rimu team had a great time swimming last week and we saw some really big improvements from a lot of our students. With that out of the way we are back into our proper routine, with reading zone, free writing and workshops all back in full swing. As fast as the term is going we are getting in a lot of learning and the students are beginning to show maturity and self management in the Rimu Team.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports is taking place this Thursday at the Millennium Pools, 15 March. With the year 5 and 6 beginning their races at 11am and finishing up around 2:00pm. Can we please ask if you decide to take your child home from the pools you MUST sign them out with the sign out person who will be situated by the exit.

Kids Blog

Our students are starting to publish their work to the Rimu Kidsblog.  The work that they put up should be pieces of writing that they have drafted in class and are very proud of and want to share.  We encourage students not to just use it as a format to post unrelated things as it is not intended to be a social media format but a celebration of good work.  We encourage parents to view the students writing and offer constructive feedback through the comments section.  Check it out (link below) the Rimu blog and check in regularly to see any new posts.

ICSS Cricket

Congratulations to the Bayfield cricket teams that represented the school at the ICSS cricket tournament. Both teams represented the school incredibly well and the A team even took out the whole competition to defend the trophy for a second year.
  • Note from the library:
  • We are about halfway through the job of preparing books that were donated in last year's Book Bonanza.  In order to all of these wonderful books into circulation, we need some extra help to finish the covering/taping.
Can anyone spare some time to volunteer to help Isa with this?
If you can help please email Isa (isaR@bayfield.school.nz).

Image result for growth mindset

The Rimu Team

We have had a great start to 2018 full of fun and exciting learning opportunities to grow and stretch our brains.  We have our reading, writing and math programmes up and running and we are collaborating with Kauri team in the afternoons to give our students a range of other learning experiences. Jack is taking PE, Tina is running art workshops, Holly is offering digital technology experiences and Sven is taking leadership development sessions.

Reading Zone

The Goal of Reading Zone is to create passionate readers. Students are given the guidance around book choices and are encouraged to broaden their reading horizons. Students should read the same book for at least 30mins at school and then again at night (an hour a day). We observed amazing results in all areas of literacy after doing reading zone for the second half of last year.
  • Please try and remind your child to read their Reading Zone book every night and discuss all the amazing books they are reading. Some children have already read at least 5 books this year so far.
  • Swimming
Remember students will be swimming every day for the next two weeks and will need their togs, towels and googles at school every day.
The school swimming sports event will take place in week 3, Thursday 15th March. Top 3 placegetters go on to represent the school at the inner city competition.

  • Bayfield Leaders
  • Congratulations to all of our students that applied for and received leadership positions last week. You are the leaders of our school and we know you will make us proud by leading through your actions.
